Landscape isn’t just a piece of earth. It can refer to a context, like the “political landscape” or a “sonic landscape.” It may refer to a pictorial orientation, “landscape” as opposed to “portrait.” It can also be a verb, speaking to the way that the land is manicured, manipulated, made to serve human interests and desires. Now Navigations highlights contemporary filmmakers who are using sound and image to produce cognitive maps, a way to understand landscapes and find our place within them.
