After thirty years of work, Phil Tippett (the VFX legend responsible for some of the most iconic practical effects in movies such as the original Star Wars trilogy, Jurassic Park, Robocop, and Starship Troopers) has redefined the medium of stop-motion animation. Mad God may be the most technically jaw-dropping work of stop-motion animation ever put to film—and the most disturbing. Over the course of half an hour of painstakingly rendered and unbelievably complex animation, Tippett drags the viewer through a dialogue-free, sparsely plotted, and incredibly gory descent into a Hellish underworld. The film asks difficult questions about the role of humanity in relation to the epic scale of time and space, the nature of war, industrialization, and labor, and the meaning of creation and religious belief. It’s a lot to convey without a single word of dialogue, but Tippett trusts the audience to follow him on this journey. Those willing to make the descent into Mad God’s bleak hellscape will find themselves rewarded with a technically incredible and thematically rich masterpiece.
