After a half century, it seems as though the band Sparks, led by the mysterious Mael brothers Ron and Russell, has always been with us, in a slightly parallel universe. Edgar Wright’s lively documentary covers it all, from LA in the early 70s up to the brothers working on Annette with Leos Carax. “Wright’s film has converted me. Sparks are the Gilbert and George of pop music. Or maybe it’s truer to say Ron and Russell are the continuing reincarnation of Pete’n’Dud; they are funny, perhaps uniquely so in genuinely fusing pop music and humor, in their extraordinary, surreal lyrics and brilliant album designs” – Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian.
