Argentinian director Mariano Llinás produces an epic, monstrous, genre hopping multipart film, one that is both a critique of cinema and a reimagining of its potential. In five episodes of differing run times, and utilizing the same four brilliant actors – Laura Paredes, Elisa Carricajo, Pilar Gamboa, Valeria Correa – the circles the same issues of love and dependency, beauty and horror, and creates a kind of single dream narrative. Shot over a nine year period, the combines many genres and approaches: here is a horror film about a mummy, a film about terrorists, a film about a cult, a remake of a French classic, and a metanarrative about making a film, all starring the same four people and all existing in some kind of continuum. The film as a whole is dominated by the four performers. “This film is by and for them,” Llinás remarks in the film’s introduction. The four of them won “Best Actress” together at the Buenos Aires Film Festival.

La Flor is a “playful, absorbing, sometimes confounding and ultimately overwhelming work… What’s fascinating here is the degree to which Llinás embraces the tools of duration and attenuation, rejecting the standard machinations of thriller plotting and gleefully recalibrating the audience’s rhythms. He turns seemingly unpromising digressions into objects of the utmost narrative fascination” – Justin Chang, Los Angeles Times
