About the Event

The Filipinx Artists of Houston present FILIPINX FILM NIGHT: A Celebration of Filipino-American Identity.

Please Translate

Directed by Kelsy Lua

(2018, 6min)

Please Translate explores how language divides but eventually bridges the relationship between a mother and her daughter. In a film about sacrifice and a mother’s love, they come to realize how special their bond truly is.

Kaaway

Directed by Wester Demandante

(2018, 13min)

“Kaaway,” which means enemy in a couple Filipino dialects, is a story set in the mid ’90s of the U.S. and focuses on two 11-year-old Filipino boys. Jonathan was born and raised in the U.S., while Calag was born and raised in the Philippines. After getting into a fight at school, they are forced to spend the day at the same house and the discord is inescapable. The film’s central themes are assimilation, shame, and masculinity.

The Debut

Directed by Gene Cajayon

(2000, 88min)

The story revolves around Ben Mercado, a talented high school senior who has rejected his Filipino heritage. The long-simmering feud between Ben and his immigrant father Roland threatens to boil over and ruin the 18th birthday party of Ben’s sister Rose. But to Ben’s surprise, his sister’s celebration challenges his sense of misplaced identity, and the way he regards his father and grandfather. In one night, Ben faces the true nature of his relationships with his family, his friends, and himself.

Reception starts at 6:00 pm

Films begin at 7:00 pm

Free and open to the public.

Filipinx Artists of Houston’s mission is to grow a creative Filipinx community committed to discovery and sharing the stories of voices unheard through each of our own gifts while being rooted in the collective and individual experience of being human.
