The Actors From The London Stage to perform ‘King Lear’

About the Event

The Actors From The London Stage, an international touring theater troupe based in London and the University of Notre Dame in the United States, will be in residency at Rice University January 28-February 2nd, 2019. They will perform William Shakespeare’s “King Lear” at the university’s Hamman Hall, 6100 Main St. Performances will be at 7:30 p.m. January 31, February 1 and February 2nd.

“Nothing can come from nothing,” utters Lear in Shakespeare’s famous tragedy King Lear, as he begins his slow descent into madness. Join the Actors From The London Stage as they bring the tragic tale of King Lear, his three daughters, and the many warring noblemen to life.

The troupe, an educational program developed by Homer Swander at the University of California, Santa Barbara, and founded by famed actor Patrick Stewart, is now in its 38th year touring approximately 16 to 20 universities to give communities, students and faculty the opportunity to experience dynamic and enriching performing arts.

All roles will be played by five veterans of classical theatre: Richard James-Neale, Tricia Kelly, Ffion Jolly, Fred Lancaster and Jonathan Dryden Taylor. The program’s performers come from prestigious theater companies such as the Royal Shakespeare Company, the Royal National Theatre of Great Britain and Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre, as well as from appearances in film and on the BBC.

The troupe’s residency is being underwritten by the Alan and Shirley Grob Endowment for Shakespeare and the Grob Fund for Shakespeare in Performance, with additional support from Rice University’s Department of Visual and Dramatic Arts and Department of English.

Tickets are $15 for Rice students, alumni, faculty, staff and senior citizens; $20 for general admission; and $10 per person for groups of 10 and more. Tickets are available in advance by calling 713-348-4005 or e-mailing hamman@rice.edu.
