The Departments of Art History and Transnational Asian Studies warmly welcome everyone to a public lecture and hands-on workshop focused on Sini-Islamic calligraphy led by Haji Noor Deen Mi Guangjian, a notable master of Arabic calligraphy. Free lunch provided with this wonderful activity and talk!

“Sini-Islamic Calligraphy: Arabic Calligraphy in Chinese Tradition”

The lecture aims to introduce the aesthetic value of this intricate art form, unraveling its beauty as it seamlessly intertwines the protean Chinese brushwork with the fluidity of Arabic script. Moreover, it seeks to contextualize Sini-Islamic Calligraphy in history, unveiling its historical context and emphasizing its emergence during periods of vibrant cross-cultural exchange between China and the Islamic world. Additionally, the lecture will explore the materiality and contemporary practice of Sini-Islamic Calligraphy, investigating the materials and techniques employed in this ancient art form. By doing so, it aims to showcase how the materiality of the calligraphy contributes to its unique visual impact, providing a comprehensive understanding of the craft. After the presentation, Mr. Noor Deen will lead a hands-on workshop, providing participants with the opportunity to engage in Sini-Islamic calligraphy through a firsthand experience of its materiality and writing practice.

About the Speaker
Haji Noor Deen Mi Guangjiang 米广江
Listed in the “Top 500 Influential Muslims of 2009” by the Royal Islamic Strategic Studies Centre, Haji Noor Deen Mi Guang Jiang is a renowned master of Arabic calligraphy. Born in 1963 in Shandong province, China, he brings immense knowledge in traditional thought and Islamic art to a modern audience, juxtaposing them in a new calligraphic style uniquely his own. With profound expertise in both Chinese and Arabic calligraphy and training under luminaries such as Abbas Baghdadi, his work, collected by prestigious institutions like the British Museum, reflects the rich history of Chinese Muslims practicing Sini-Islamic Calligraphy. Beyond receiving accolades, Noor Deen is an influential educator dedicated to sharing the beauty and historical significance of this art form on a global scale. His book, “The Study of Arabic Calligraphy in Chinese Tradition,” delves into the introduction of Arabic calligraphy into China, presenting theories and research results on the various phases of this cultural exchange.
