Maria Lisogorskaya is one of the founding directors of Assemble studio, and practices between the scales of immediate hands-on material prototyping, architecture and urban strategy. Assemble is a multi-disciplinary collective working across architecture, design and art. Founded in 2010 to undertake a single self-built project, Assemble has since delivered a diverse and award-winning body of work, whilst retaining a democratic and co-operative working method that enables built, social and research-based work at a variety of scales, both making things and making things happen. Following Assemble’s first projects, Maria has led on research into and policy development of affordable workspace in London, establishing a publicly accessible workshop and fabrication venue. Maria has subsequently been developing alternative approaches to housing development in the UK and abroad, focusing on affordable, self-determinant and collective living. She has also led Assemble’s Material Institute project in New Orleans, a transformation of an industrial property in the St Roch’s area of town into a hub for the local community to learn fashion design and manufacturing. She has lectured and delivered workshops internationally, and has been awarded the Winston Churchill Fellowship to research collective building projects in US and China.
