About the Event

Please join Rice Architecture for the 10th annual Llewelyn-Davies Sahni Innovative Practice Lecture with Elizabeth Timme and Helen Leung, co-founders at LA-Màs, Los Angeles, CA, on Wednesday, March 11, at 6:00 p.m. in Farish Gallery, Anderson Hall.

Elizabeth Timme and Helen Leung’s lecture “I Heard You Build Benches” is free and open to the public, as part of the Spring 2020 Lecture Series.

Admission is free and open to the public. Registration is encouraged. To register, click here.

What does a design-focused community-based organization do beyond the transactional act of building a bench? LA-Más, an urban-design non profit working in community development, integrates both design and policy approaches into their work. Hear about how they make affordable housing projects that don’t look affordable, storefront redesigns that aren’t superficial, and what it takes to do small, yet impactful projects.

LA-Más is led by Co-Executive Directors Elizabeth Timme and Helen Leung. Elizabeth is a third generation architect born in Houston and raised in Los Angeles. Elizabeth co-founded LA-Más because she saw a need for a design approach to be integrated early on in public projects and civic planning. Helen is a Los Angeles native raised in the Frogtown neighborhood by a working class, first generation Chinese family. Helen joined LA-Más because of her passion to explore strategies that minimize displacement pressures that come with gentrification. Together, they ensure that LA-Más projects are thoughtfully designed, critically engage systemic problems, and grounded in local need.

The Spring 2020 Lecture Series is made possible through the generous support of the Betty R. and George F. Pierce Jr., FAIA, Fund.
