ON/OFF exhibition

About the Event

ON/OFF is an interactive art exhibit that will unfold in various public locations across Rice’s campus during October 23-31. Each location will be home to a group of sculptures by Rice students. The sites will be scattered around campus in a scavenger-hunt fashion and can be discovered via the interactive map on our website that can be accessed via the QR codes found on ON/OFF promotional posters.

To include remote students, the website-map will link to a media gallery for each sculpture location. Live updates can be posted by students who visit the locations and submit photos via our social media channels. In addition, we will post footage of Rice’s wildlife – those adorable squirrels – exploring the sites. As campus residents visit the sites and upload a growing mosaic of posts, the more immersive this exhibit becomes for their remote fellow students.

Additionally, one location (Sewell Hall Courtyard) will be 360 live streamed during the daylight hours of the week of the show. We invite all students to perform or monologue within the streaming zone to entertain and connect with remote students to heal our pandemic-fragmented Rice community. Remote students can respond by submitting videos of performances or monologues via our social media channels and we will incorporate these into the stream of website content.

We hope that these spheres of presence will provide a window into life on campus during the pandemic, serve as a record of these trying times for Fondren Library’s digital archives, and provide a platform for critical social and political discourse in a crucial election year.

Please check in on our website and social media for live updates on the show – we will have several easter egg / flash performances around the sites, and the attentive eye stands to win gift cards and other prizes like posters and sculptures from the show!
