Public Lecture: Jaime Lauriano

About the Event

The Brazilian artist Jaime Lauriano will present the 2021 Black Encyclopedia which he organized with the anthropologist Lilia M. Schwarcz and historian Flávio Gomes. The result of seven years’ research, this project seeks to redress the invisibility of Black protagonists in Brazilian history. The encyclopedia compiles 417 entries focusing on more than 550 Black people in Brazil from the colonial times to the present day. Along with the publication, an eponymous exhibition showcasing 103 works made by 36 contemporary Black artists opened in May 2021 at the Pinacoteca of São Paulo.

Talk in Brazilian Portuguese. Simultaneous English interpretation will be provided.

About the Artist

Jaime Lauriano is a multimedia artist who lives and works in Porto, Portugal and São Paulo, Brazil. He has participated in numerous exhibitions in Brazil as well as in Miami, Viena, Cape Town, and Bamako. He was one of the winners of the 2017 edition of Marcantonio Vilaça, a prestigious art prize in Brazil, and he is currently represented by Galeria Leme. His works are often based on archival research and examine the structures of power that underlie the production of history. Through deceptively minimalist creations, Lauriano explores the mechanism behind state control and institutional power–involving police force, prisons, and borders–and how they have shaped contemporary society. He is interested in propaganda films and the impact of visual narratives on the public imagination. His broader artistic project aims at revising our current understanding of history from a more inclusive and collective perspective.
