September 12, 2007. "Camera Obscura, a pinhole camera demonstration" by Paul Hester, photography instructor. 2:00 p.m. Department of Visual & Dramatic Arts in the Rice Media Center bldg. This event is free and open to the public.
September 27, 2007. The Art of the Book, an opportunity to view recently acquired rare books with work by Ezra Pound, E.E. Cummings, Robert Creeley, and Paul Eluard and original art prints by Picasso, Motherwell, Dine, and Turrell--among others. Sponsored by the Department of Visual and Dramatic Arts, Friends of Fondren Library, and the Woodson Research Center. 5:30-7:00 p.m. Kyle Morrow Room, Fondren Library. This event is free and open to the public.
October 2, 2007. "Development of Japanese Contemporary Prints in the Twentieth Century" by Japanese Printmaker, Akira Kurosaki. Mr. Akira Kurosaki, the Dean of the Department of Printmaking at Seika University in Kyoto, has been very active as the top woodcut artist in Japan for the last thirty years. Rice University is honored to host such a distinguished artist. Please join us as he presents a lecture entitled "Development of Japanese Contemporary Prints in the Twentieth Century". The lecture, free and open to the public, will take place at 7:00 p.m. in the Department of Visual and Dramatic Arts Auditorium, Rice Media Center location. This event is in partnership with the Museum of Printing History and endorsed by the Consulate-General of Japan at Houston.
October 3, 2007. Printmaking Demonstration by Akira Kurosaki. Woodblock printmaking demonstration by Mr. Akira Kurosaki, the Dean of the Department of Printmaking at Seika University in Kyoto. This demonstration will take place in room 201 (The Print Palace) Sewall Hall at 2:00 p.m. and it is free and open to the public. This event is in partnership with the Museum of Printing History and endorsed by the Consulate-General of Japan at Houston.
October 23rd through November 21, 2007. My God Told Me to Kill Your God: Exhibition on War. The Department of Visual and Dramatic Arts, Dean of Humanities and the Boniuk Center for the Study and Advancement of Religious Tolerance at Rice University are partnering with The Station Museum of Contemporary Art to produce an art exhibition addressing war in the 21st century. The exhibition, curated by Karin Broker, professor and chair of the Department of Visual and Dramatic Arts and Brian Huberman, associate chair and professor at Rice University, will be held in the main exhibition gallery, the Rice Media Center Location. The exhibition will begin with a several opening events that will include talks by exhibition artists, a panel symposium with guest speaker Mel Chin and a film screening by a recent graduate, Jonathan Polenz, of the film program at Rice and one by guest filmmaker, Paula Fouce.
November 9, 10 & 15-17, 2007. Rice Theatre Production: Hecuba by Euripides. Hecuba, former queen now a slave to the Greeks, is in mourning for her husband and the devastated city of Troy when she discovers that a trusted friend has killed her son. He has his reasons; reasons he feels are justified. Hecuba's grief turns to rage and desperate revenge. Are the affects of war so demoralizing that horrific acts are committed out of fear of retribution spinning the situation out of control in a cycle that may never end? Judge for yourself.
